The Event
At the beginning of April, CSN-INTRAN project partner Aquacultur hosted a 3-day study visit to Germany. Unfortunately the timing coincided with serious floods affecting the Czech Republic and Romania, preventing six of the booked participants from leaving their farms. However, another six from Estonia, Latvia and Hungary made it to Nienburg near Hannover and enjoyed excellent hospitality and a very stimulating series of visits.

The starting point was a presentation and tour of Aquacultur’s workshops and warehouse to learn more about the company’s capabilities and track record. This was followed by a visit to Ahrenhorster Edelfish, a European catfish farm with a production of 100 tonnes per year using recirculated water systems. A trip to the local bowling centre in the evening provided a relaxing opportunity for participants to get to know each other. On the second day an opportunity was given for the participants to introduce their companies before travelling to Wietzendorf to see a partially recirculated trout farm. The third day took the participants to a flow-through trout farm in Altenbrak followed by a visit to the aquatic technology company Sander. Particularly impressive here was a pilot-scale recirculated seabass farm, used for developing and testing the company’s water treatment technologies.
All the participants considered the tour well worthwhile and returned home with new ideas and future business partnerships.
